Mozambique is one of Africa’s most picturesque countries along the coast of Africa’s Indian Ocean. We highlight some of the best tourist attractions in Mozambique that make this country a fascinating African destination.

The Island of Mozambique

The Island of Mozambique is one of the main attractions in the country, and most tourists love exploring it. Named as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country, this island holds so much of Mozambique’s history and culture that dates back to the 17th and 18th Century.

Mozambique Island is arguably one of the best destinations in Africa for beach holidays. The warm weather, sunshine and vast beaches have made Mozambique Island a traveller’s paradise.

The Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago lies opposite the resort town of Vilanculos. This archipelago is made up of 5 main islands. Bazaruto islands are well known as a popular diving destination, with a variety of marine life.

As one of the major attraction sites, tourists visiting the area see enormous sand dunes and freshwater lakes of Bazaruto Island, which are frequented by a wide variety of water birds such as flamingos and crocodiles.

Gorongosa National Park

In addition to the beach, tourists will find an abundance of wildlife at the Gorongosa National Park. The park sits in over 4000km of land centrally located in Mozambique.

The diverse habitat of the park is one of Africa’s most spectacular places to visit to spot wildlife like elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, over 740 bird life species and many more wildlife species.

Maputo City

Maputo is the capital city of Mozambique. It is located towards the southern part of the country.  Maputo is the largest city in Mozambique, and the country’s most important harbour is also located here.

There are numerous tourist attractions to visit in Maputo and they include the Tunduru Botanical Gardens, the Eiffel House, Notre Dame Cathedral of the Concession or the National Museum of Arts.

The Quirimbas Archipelago

Located towards the northern part of the country lies another of the top tourist attractions in Mozambique, The Quirimbas Archipelago. It contains a delightful cluster of about 32 islands with Pemba as its gateway.

      Among some African countries, there’s an agreement of getting Visa upon Arrival or the possibility of visiting for a period of less than 3 months visa free. You may check on this website whether Mozambique and Nigeria have such agreements.
