Rocket Internet's Jumia food / FoodPanda launches 1st mobile app; spreads to 2 new countries in Latin America

March 5th, 2013

Rocket Internet-backed FoodPanda (Jumia food in some countries), an online platform for aggregating and delivering food from take-out restaurants, launched its first mobile app on Android and iOS. It has also expanded into two more emerging markets - Argentina and Venezuela, thereby expanding its operations in Latin America and bringing its total operational footprint to 25 markets globally.

It is now officially the online food delivery service with the widest geographical reach compared to the likes of GrubHub in the U.S., or Just-Eat or Delivery Hero in Europe.

The app lets users specify their area and then lists all the available restaurants nearby. Once an order is placed, the user receives a notification with their order details and an expected delivery time.

The new FoodPanda app is available in 14 markets initially, namely: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal and Russia. Within the next two weeks, FoodPanda said the app will also be available in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Hungary and Poland.

Just last month, we reported that Ralf Wenzel was engaged as the new MD.

FoodPanda operates under a variety of brand names in the different markets, including jumia food and HungryPanda. The full list of markets it operates in is as follows: Argentina, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Venezuela, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and Senegal.

FoodPanda, Rocket Internet’s Answer To GrubHub, Now Delivering Food In 25 Emerging Markets; Launches First Mobile App

March 4th, 2013

Rocket Internet-backed FoodPanda, an online platform for aggregating and delivering food from take-out restaurants, has expanded into two more emerging markets and also launched its first mobile app on Android and iOS. The FoodPanda delivery service apes the likes of GrubHub in the U.S., or Just-Eat or Delivery Hero in Europe but in classic Rocket Internet style it’s taking the model to emerging markets.

The two new markets added to FoodPanda’s menu are Argentina and Venezuela, expanding its operations in Latin America and bringing its total operational footprint to 25 markets. FoodPanda has been expanding quickly in recent months. Early last month it added another 12 countries, ramping up in its target emerging markets quickly — allowing it to claim it is “the online food delivery service with the widest geographical reach”, targeting a population of three billion people across its footprint (with “more than 10,000 restaurants signed up”).

The service was founded about a year ago, according to SG Entrepreneurs, although a Rocket Internet spokesman said FoodPanda launched food deliveries in Asia six months ago and in all other markets three months ago. The spokesman would not confirm how many orders FoodPanda has processed since launch, or how many registered users it has. We also asked about its funding level to date and were told funding will be announced “within the next weeks”. FoodPanda is currently in the process of raising money to help fuel continued growth.

Rocket Internet’s Foodpanda rapidly expands – launches in 12 new countries

February 6th, 2013

Rocket Internet’s online food delivery platform Foodpanda is expanding to twelve new countries, bringing the total markets the company is in to 23. New managing director Ralf Wenzel is heading the global roll-out.

The platform is moving fast on its global roll-out. Over the past few weeks, it launched in Brazil, Chile, Ghana, Hungary, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Senegal and Ukraine.

Foodpanda is focusing on the lucrative emerging markets in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and Latin America, where the internet scene is rapidly growing.

Known for their huge funding rounds, Rocket Internet is now actively seeking financing to aide the rapid growth of Foodpanda. This shouldn’t be too much of a challenge, considering prior investments in Rocket Internet portfolio companies include $65m for Dafiti and $40m for South-East Asian Amazon clone, Lazada.

Heading the Foodpanda expansion is new global managing director Ralf Wenzel, who will launch the platform in more countries in the future. Prior to Foodpanda, Wenzel held the position of senior vice president at Rocket Internet-launched Jamba/Jamster.

Foodpanda is part of a group of Rocket-backed food ordering platforms (HungryPanda, jumia food etc) worldwide.

The expansion news is another sign that the online food delivery marketplace is heating up. Just last week, fellow Berlin-headquartered service Delivery Hero announced a takeover of UK rival Hungryhouse and Eatitnow.

Foodpanda is taking a more aggressive approach to expansion in comparison to Delivery Hero, which is currently available in 12 countries across Europe, Australia, South Korea, China and Mexico.

Rocket's Senegalese Food Delivery Service, jumia Food, Continues To Expand

January 31st, 2013

Launched December 3 in Dakar Senegal, Rocket Internet’s jumia food has already signed up 30 hotels in a move the food ordering website will simplify lives of Senegalese consumers.

Boasting of simplified meal ordering process with a range of specialties, Joe Falter, Hellfood’s CEO said the meal ordering services are too complicated and not fast enough but Hellofood was created to solve that.

Falter says, ordering for meals on jumia food takes just a few clicks as clients just enter their neighbourhood, choose their preferred restaurant and click on the menu they like and Hellofood ensures the food is delivered.

According to him, the web is central to consumers and restaurateurs as consumers spend much of their free time online and restaurateurs too, are online or social networks building their reputation and reaching out to more clients.

A number of restaurateurs such as Walid Ezzedine, owner of Shogun and Thomas Gomis, owner of Taste of Asia believe the food delivery service will help them increase their customer base. Ezzedine says “online ordering will be very well received” by consumers who have less time to go out to a restaurant while Gomis adds, “The presence of my restaurants on Hellofood will undoubtedly increase my sales.”

jumia food Senegal is now live in Dakar, but has plans to spread to other cities in the country.

Pakistan Loving Fatburger as Fast Food Boom Ignores Drones

January 8th, 2013

On a Saturday afternoon in Pakistan, dozens of teenagers and young families stand in line at an upmarket Karachi mall, waiting to order burgers at the latest fast-food store in town.

“I’ve been coming here every alternate day for the past month to see if it’s opened yet or not,” Hana Khan, consultant for restaurant delivery website foodpanda, said at the Jan. 5 launch of Fatburger, a Beverly Hills, California-based hamburger chain that also operates in 14 countries outside the U.S. Within two hours of the doors opening, all 130 seats inside were taken and dozens of people were waiting at the ordering counter.

Local and overseas business groups are queuing up to buy franchise rights in Pakistan for an array of popular food sold from Los Angeles to Kuala Lumpur, driven by rising demand from a booming middle class in South Asia’s second-biggest economy after India. Pakistanis increasingly flock to American food outlets even as ties between the two nations are strained by U.S. drone missile strikes in the northwest of the country.

Johnny Rockets Group Inc., another American fast-food group based in Aliso Viejo, California, that operates or franchises 68 hamburger restaurants in 16 countries, Second Cup Ltd., a coffee shop chain based in Missisauga, Canada, with over 360 cafes and Malaysia’s MammaRoti and PappaRoti are set to open their first stores in Pakistan this year.
